There are too many Onsens in Hanamaki
Hanamaki city in Iwate prefecture of Japan is famous for Onsen. There are more than 20 Onsens as you can see the red tags in the map below.
If you come to Hanamaki for the first time to enjoy Onsen, you couldn’t decide which Onsen you go to. I’ve lived in Hanamaki city for 3 years. From my experience, I recommend 3 Onsen where you should go.
1. Namari Onsen of Fujisan Ryokan
Fujisan Ryokan was established in 1841. It’s very old-fashioned Onsen. Fujisan Ryokan is famous for the deepest bathtub in Japan. It’s called Sirozaru no Yu. The depth is about 1.25m. You take the bath with standing and if you have kids, you need to hold them so they don’t drown. It’s a unisex hot spring but also has the time for women only use. please check the website in details.
Besides that, there are Katsura-no-Yu and Shiraito-no-Yu. Both are open-air baths nearby river. They are beautiful.

2. Oosawa Onsen Toujiya
People who live in Hanamaki say “You should go to Oosawa Onsen first of all”. Especially, Oosawa-no-Yu is the best. It’s an open-air bath that you can see amazing scenery. Also you can take the Oosawa-no-Yu from 7am in the morning, too. You would be surprised by the differences of the scenery between night and morning. It’s a unisex hot spring but also has the time for women only use.
Other than that, there are an indoor bath that’s called Yakushi-no-Yu and an open-air bath of women only use that’s called Kawabe-no-Yu.

3. Yuukaen Nagomi-no-yu Yamanokami-Onsen
Nagomi-no-Yu is a new Onsen that was established in 2019. There are a lot of old-fashioned Onsens but new ones are few.
If you are a Sauna-lover, you would like it. The sauna isn’t common in the Onsen of Hanamaki. I think there are 2 or 3 saunas in Hanamaki so it’s rare. I’m also Sauna-lover and my favorite one is here.
